UTAH ORIGINAL WRITING COMPETITION --- NO ENTRY FEE. The competition identifies and awards Utah writers for works of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry in the form of short stories, essays, poems, and full-length manuscripts for readers of all ages. Deadline June 27, 2014. There are several first book categories. First prizes $1,000 and second prizes $500.

NCW PERSONAL ESSAY/CREATIVE NONFICTION CONTEST ---  $20 ENTRY FEE.  Northern Colorado Writers is hosting its 4th annual Personal Essay/Creative Nonfiction writing contest, open to everyone. 1st: $1,000; 2nd: $250; 3rd: $100. Winners and honorable mentions of this and the other two contests in the series (Poetry coming up next) will be published in and receive a free copy of the winners' anthology, POOLED INK. Maximum 5,000 words. Deadline June 30, 2014.

LOVE ON THE ROAD --- $10 ENTRY FEE. We're looking for stories about two people making a connection, whether this connection is platonic, the kind that leads to a wedding, the kind that just leads to a bed, or the kind that leads to a heartbreak. We're interested in stories about two people traveling together, a traveler who meets someone while on the road, or a person who meets a traveler passing through. Submissions should be 4,000 to 6,000 words and can be fiction or nonfiction. They must be original and cannot have been previously published. Submissions from LGBTQ writers are welcome. Deadline July 31, 2014. Malinki Press will choose 12 submissions and send those to our independent panel of judges. The judges will choose first-, second-, and third-prize winners. We'll announce the winners in September and award them prizes of $200, $100, and $50, respectively, paid that month.

2014 MIND MAGAZINE INSIGHT POETRY PRIZE COMPETITION --- $10 ENTRY FEE. $300 for first prize, $150 for second prize, and $50 each for three honorable mentions. Winners will be published in Mind Magazine's top talent showcase section. All poems submitted will be considered for standard publication.  Submit 1-3 unpublished poems, up to three pages each. Deadline for all entries is August 15, 2014. Winner will be announced in September, 2014. The Mind Magazine 2014 INSIGHT Poetry Prize Competition will be judged by award winning poet Michael Spring and Editor-in-chief Rich Norman.

ORDINARY GURU CONTEST --- NO ENTRY FEE. Have you ever met an everyday, ordinary guru who helped you break a myth that held you back, sparked insight, or helped you see the world a little differently? If so, tell us your story by entering the Ordinary Guru Contest. You can submit a short story, essay, memoir, photo essay, cartoon, graphic novel or poem. First Prize: $5,000. Second Prize: $2,500. Third Prize: $1,500. Open only to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia, and Canada (excluding Quebec), who are 18 years and older. Contest ends August 31, 2014.

PALETTES & QUILLS BIENNIAL POETRY CHAPBOOK COMPETITION --- $20 ENTRY FEE. $200 cash award plus 50 copies of the published book. Additional copies will be available at an author's discount. All finalists will receive one free copy of the published book. Deadline September 30, 2014.
