Creative Writing Contest

Greetings everyone, 2014 is here, and with it the start of another exciting contest season. There are some innovative changes coming this year. In addition to Narrative Poetry, and Light Verse, the poets among us have two new poetry categories to choose from: Prose Poem and Love/Loss.

New in the prose competition is: Spiritual Story/Essay. Returning are perennial favorites: Creative Non-Fiction, Fiction, and First Chapter. Back as well are Flash, Speculative Fiction, and Media Article.

The big news this year is in the manuscript categories. The word limit has been increased for First Chapter, while Middle Grade, Young Adult, and Novel manuscript categories are now for complete, unpublished manuscripts instead of just the first three chapters. But that isn’t all, even if your manuscript entry has won a previous LUW cash award in a Prose, First Chapter, or First Three Chapters category, you can now enter it as a full manuscript.

The submission period opens March 15 and closes June 15. The winners will be announced at our annual writer‘s conference in September. Entry forms, rules, and submission guidelines are available on the League of Utah Writers website.

All entrants receive a blind critique from a writing professional who is outside the League. Notice that as you prepare your entries for the contest, this gets them ready for submission and publication. Remember, the chapter that submits the most contest entries receives $100.00, and the chapter with the second most entries receives $50.00.

So get to your keyboards, everyone, 2014 may be your year to shine. Email your contest questions to:
