St. George Book Festival Author Interview with Amy Jarecki

Amy Jarecki has won multiple writing awards and lives in St. George with her husband, Bob. She writes contemporary romance and Scottish historical romance. For fun, she hikes, bikes and plays a mean game of golf. Born in Alturas, California, Amy holds an MBA from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland.

What are three words that describe you?
Perseverant, fun, intense.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Morning person.

What is your favorite food?
Pizza.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?
Scotland. I love it there—love the history and it’s where my roots started. If I could afford a second home, it would be in the Highlands.

Do you listen to music while writing?
Yes – Bach, Celtic Harp and Renaissance music.

What's your favorite book or who is your favorite writer?
Impossible! Recently I’ve enjoyed titles by: Monica McCarty, Tessa Dare and Elizabeth Chadwick.

Can you tell us a bit about your latest manuscript?
I just finished a MS about a Scottish woman who is marked by the devil. Her father’s kept her hidden on a remote isle, but when Ian MacLeod washes ashore with a musket ball in his back, they’ve no choice but to take him in. But, to do so may be the end of them all…

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?
Everything. What do you want to know, because I’ve probably screwed it up first…

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?
I’m a plotter. Can’t write a word until I hash out some of the details. Of course, the characters then go off and do whatever the heck they want. LOL.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?
Yes, but I try to keep them in line. A very difficult task, I daresay. That blasted Merrin from the last story constantly came up with the most disarming prose.

Is there anything you would do differently?
Yes. Yes. And…yes.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?
I try to watch the world around me. I find influences every day.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?
Write, write and write some more. Take classes, learn your craft. And did I say write?
